Virtual Mac: Run macOS on iPad With Xcode, Final Cut Pro, and Terminal

By Prahlad Menon 2 min read

People have dreamed of running macOS on iPad for over a decade. Today, it’s real.

Virtual Mac runs full macOS on jailbroken iPad Pro (M1/M2) and iPad Air (M1), complete with GPU acceleration. Xcode, Terminal, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro — they all work.

What You Can Run

This isn’t a remote desktop or streaming solution. It’s actual macOS virtualized on iPad hardware:

AppStatus
Xcode✅ Full IDE with compiler
Terminal✅ Native shell access
Final Cut Pro✅ With GPU acceleration (macOS 14+)
Logic Pro✅ Full DAW
Pixelmator Pro✅ With Metal
OpenGL/OpenCL apps✅ Accelerated (macOS 14+)

Metal acceleration works across all supported macOS versions. Final Cut Pro specifically requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later.

Requirements

Hardware:

  • iPad Pro (M1 or M2)
  • iPad Air (M1)
  • 16GB RAM models (1TB/2TB storage) provide best experience

Software:

  • iPadOS 14 up to 16.3.1 (jailbreakable versions)
  • Jailbreak via Dopamine (iPadOS 15-16.3.1) or Taurine (iPadOS 14-14.8.1)

macOS Support:

  • macOS 12 Monterey through macOS 26 Tahoe
  • Experimental: macOS 27 Golden Gate
  • Recommended: macOS 15 Sequoia

Note: iPadOS 16.4+ removed Hypervisor support from the kernel, so newer iPadOS versions don’t work yet.

Installation

  1. Jailbreak your iPad using Dopamine or Taurine
  2. Add the repo in Sileo: https://nfzerox.github.io/cydia/
  3. Search and install Virtual Mac
  4. Download macOS through the app’s built-in installer

That’s it. The app handles creating the VM, downloading macOS, and installation.

How It Works

Virtual Mac uses hardware CPU virtualization (the iPad’s Hypervisor framework) combined with paravirtualized graphics. Performance is roughly equivalent to running macOS in VirtualBuddy or UTM on an M1/M2 Mac.

The technical achievement here is significant:

Extracting macOS Frameworks

The virtualization stack (Hypervisor, Virtualization, ParavirtualizedGraphics) comes from macOS. But Apple’s dyld shared cache optimization makes these frameworks unloadable directly.

The project’s uncache.py script:

  • Walks cache slide information
  • Separates in-image rebases from cross-image binds
  • Resolves symbols and source images
  • Lays out Mach-O segments fresh
  • Emits new chained pointer fixups
  • Preserves pointer authentication metadata

Platform Restamping

After extraction, frameworks get restamped from macOS to iOS platform identifiers. Multiple shims bridge missing APIs that macOS frameworks expect but iPadOS doesn’t provide.

USB Installation Bridge

macOS installation normally uses AppleUSBUserHCI (absent from iPadOS). The project reconstructs this controller path in userspace and forwards virtual USB endpoint traffic to MobileDevice and usbmuxd components.

First-Ever Features

Virtual Mac is the first to support:

  • Final Cut Pro in virtualization (via modified GLDRendererMetal)
  • OpenGL/OpenCL acceleration in any macOS VM

Using Touch and Keyboard

Magic Keyboard isn’t required — touchscreen works:

GestureAction
Single tapClick
Two-finger tapRight-click
Two-finger scrollScroll
Keyboard iconVirtual keyboard

Tips:

  • Move the HUD to different corners or hide it via the More menu
  • Set up auto-login for seamless start: System Settings → Users & Groups → Automatically log in
  • No hardware Escape key? Use ⌘ + Period

Limitations

  • No iCloud/Apple Account — Choose “Set Up Later” during setup
  • iPadOS 16.4+ not supported — Hypervisor was removed from the kernel
  • Jailbreak required — This won’t work on stock iPadOS
  • Dopamine-roothide not compatible — Use standard Dopamine

Also Works on iPhone

Virtual Mac also runs on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max (iOS 16-16.3.1). Yes, really. Xcode on an iPhone.

Troubleshooting

Common fixes:

IssueSolution
Permission denied on install-launcherChange /var/root permissions to “Read, Execute” for Others in Filza
Unexpected device state ‘DFU’Temporarily uninstall usbmuxd in Sileo
”launcher cannot become root”Disable “Disable Tweak Injection” in Choicy for Virtual Mac
Conflicts with other tweaksRemove tweaks one by one to find the conflict

Pro tip: If you have Codex or Claude Code, the project suggests connecting your iPad via SSH and having the AI agent diagnose issues live against the codebase.

Why This Matters

The iPad Pro has had Mac-class chips since 2021. The hardware could always run macOS — Apple just chose not to let it.

This project demonstrates:

  1. The hardware is capable — M1/M2 iPads virtualize macOS with GPU acceleration
  2. The software barrier is artificial — With enough reverse engineering, macOS frameworks run on iPadOS
  3. Pro workflows are possible — Xcode, Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro all function

For developers stuck with iPadOS’s limitations, this is a glimpse of what Apple could ship but hasn’t.

Credits

The project builds on years of community research:

  • dsce — Proved shared cache extraction was possible
  • DyldExtractor — Basis for arm64e framework extraction
  • MacWSBootingGuide — macOS frameworks on iPadOS proof-of-concept
  • HvDecompile — Hypervisor reverse engineering
  • UTM — iOS virtualization foundation

Plus “recent advances in agentic coding” — AI-assisted development helped bring it all together.
