Universal DB MCP: Query Any Database with Natural Language

By Prahlad Menon 4 min read

Imagine asking your AI assistant: “Show me the top 10 customers by order value this month” — and getting instant results from your production database. No SQL. No context switching. Just a question and an answer.

Universal DB MCP makes this possible by bridging AI assistants with your databases through the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

The Problem It Solves

Every developer knows the drill: you need a quick data check, so you open your database client, remember the schema, write the query, run it, interpret the results. For complex questions, this dance might take 10-15 minutes.

With Universal DB MCP, you stay in your AI assistant and ask in plain English:

You: "What's the average order value for users who signed up in the last 30 days?"

AI: Let me query that for you...

┌─────────────────────────────────────┐
│ Average Order Value: $127.45       │
│ Total New Users: 1,247             │
│ Users with Orders: 892 (71.5%)     │
└─────────────────────────────────────┘

The AI handles the SQL generation, execution, and formatting. You get answers in seconds.

17 Databases, 55+ Platforms

This isn’t a toy that only works with PostgreSQL on Claude Desktop. Universal DB MCP supports:

Databases:

  • MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite
  • Oracle, SQL Server
  • MongoDB, Redis
  • ClickHouse (OLAP)
  • TiDB, OceanBase (distributed)
  • 10 Chinese domestic databases (Dameng, KingbaseES, GaussDB, etc.)

AI Platforms:

  • Claude Desktop, Claude Code
  • Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code
  • ChatGPT (via API)
  • Dify, Coze, n8n
  • JetBrains IDEs (2025.1+)
  • Neovim, Emacs
  • And 40+ more

If your tools support MCP or REST APIs, Universal DB MCP works with them.

Quick Start

Install globally:

npm install -g universal-db-mcp

Add to Claude Desktop config (~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json on macOS):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "my-database": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "universal-db-mcp",
        "--type", "mysql",
        "--host", "localhost",
        "--port", "3306",
        "--user", "root",
        "--password", "your_password",
        "--database", "your_database"
      ]
    }
  }
}

Restart Claude Desktop and start asking:

  • “Show me the structure of the users table”
  • “Count orders from the last 7 days”
  • “Find the top 5 products by sales”

Performance That Scales

Schema retrieval is often the bottleneck with database tools. Universal DB MCP uses intelligent caching and batch optimization to handle large databases:

TablesBeforeAfterImprovement
50 tables~5s~200ms25x faster
100 tables~10s~300ms33x faster
500 tables~50s~500ms100x faster

For enterprise databases with hundreds of tables, this is the difference between usable and unusable.

Security First

By default, Universal DB MCP runs in read-only mode. All write operations (INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, DROP) are blocked.

For situations where you need more control, there are fine-grained permission modes:

ModeAllowed Operations
safe (default)SELECT only
readwriteSELECT, INSERT, UPDATE
fullAll operations (dangerous!)
customSpecify exact permissions

There’s also built-in data masking for sensitive fields — phone numbers, emails, ID cards, and bank cards are automatically protected.

Best practices:

  • Use dedicated read-only database accounts
  • Never enable write mode in production
  • Connect through VPN or bastion hosts
  • Audit query logs regularly

Four Ways to Connect

Universal DB MCP offers flexible architecture depending on your use case:

  1. MCP stdio — Direct integration with Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.
  2. MCP SSE — Server-Sent Events for Dify and remote access
  3. MCP Streamable HTTP — Latest MCP 2025 spec (recommended for new integrations)
  4. REST API — For n8n, Coze, and custom applications

HTTP mode exposes all endpoints simultaneously:

# Start HTTP server
export MODE=http
export HTTP_PORT=3000
export API_KEYS=your-secret-key
npx universal-db-mcp

# Test
curl http://localhost:3000/api/health

Schema Enhancement for Better Text2SQL

Raw database schemas often lack context. Universal DB MCP includes schema enhancement features:

  • Table comments — Preserves and surfaces documentation
  • Implicit relationship inference — Detects foreign key patterns even when not explicitly defined
  • Enum value extraction — Understands constrained fields

These improvements boost Text2SQL accuracy, especially for complex queries involving multiple tables.

Why MCP Matters

The Model Context Protocol is becoming the standard for connecting AI assistants to external tools. Rather than building custom integrations for every database and every AI platform, MCP provides a universal interface.

Universal DB MCP demonstrates what’s possible when that interface is implemented thoughtfully — with performance optimization, security controls, and support for real-world enterprise databases.

If you’re building AI-powered applications that need database access, this is the infrastructure layer you don’t want to build yourself.
