Claude Remote Control vs OpenClaw: Is Anthropic's New Feature a Killer?

Anthropic dropped Claude Code Remote Control yesterday. Within hours, people were calling it an “OpenClaw killer.”

Is it? Let’s look at what each actually does.

What Claude Remote Control Is

Remote Control lets you access a local Claude Code session from your phone, tablet, or any web browser. Start a coding session on your Mac, continue it from your iPhone.

Run it with:

Your local CLI session syncs to Claude’s web/mobile interface. You can send prompts, review code, approve actions — all from your phone while your computer does the actual work.

Key characteristics:

Requires Claude Pro ($20/mo) or Max ($100-200/mo)
Session runs locally on your machine
Local MCP servers, tools, and configs stay available
One session at a time
Terminal must stay open
Times out after ~10 minutes offline
Currently research preview (not available for Team/Enterprise)

Simon Willison’s early take: “a little bit janky right now” — he hit 500 errors, permission issues, and quirky session behavior. But he expects Anthropic to iron it out quickly.

What OpenClaw Is

OpenClaw is a self-hosted AI assistant that connects to all your messaging platforms — WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Signal, iMessage. It runs on your own hardware with any LLM backend.

Key characteristics:

Open source, free
Multi-channel: message your assistant on WhatsApp, get responses anywhere
Model-agnostic: Claude, GPT, Ollama, whatever you want
Cron jobs and scheduled tasks built-in
Browser automation, file operations, custom tools
Persistent memory system
Runs as daemon — survives reboots, works offline

*Anthropic also announced scheduled tasks in Cowork the same day, but with a big caveat: tasks only run while your computer is awake and Claude Desktop is open.

Where Remote Control Wins

Simplicity. If you’re already a Claude Code user, Remote Control is one command. No setup, no config, no self-hosting.

Integration. It’s native to Claude’s ecosystem. Same interface, same context, seamless experience between desktop and mobile.

Polish (eventually). Anthropic has resources to make this smooth. The jank will get fixed. OpenClaw will always be more DIY.

Where OpenClaw Wins

Always-on. OpenClaw runs as a daemon. Your computer can sleep, reboot, whatever — the assistant keeps working. Remote Control times out after 10 minutes offline.

Multi-platform reach. Remote Control only works through Claude’s own apps. OpenClaw meets you on WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Signal, iMessage. You don’t need to open a specific app — the assistant is wherever you already are.

Scheduled automation. Cron is built into OpenClaw’s DNA. Set up reminders, recurring tasks, automated workflows. Claude’s Cowork scheduling requires the desktop app to be open — not a real daemon.

Model freedom. Want to use GPT-4 for some tasks, Claude for others, and a local Llama for privacy-sensitive stuff? OpenClaw routes between models. Remote Control is Claude-only.

Cost. OpenClaw is free. At $200/month for Claude Max, that’s $2,400/year. For teams, self-hosted OpenClaw starts looking very attractive.

Is It a “Killer”?

No. They serve different users.

Remote Control is for: Claude power users who want mobile access to their existing Claude Code workflow. If you’re already paying for Claude Max and live in the Claude ecosystem, it’s a nice addition.

OpenClaw is for: People who want a truly personal AI assistant that lives across all their platforms, runs autonomously, supports any model, and doesn’t require a subscription.

The “killer” framing misses the point. Remote Control makes Claude Code more accessible. OpenClaw makes any AI more integrated into your life.

If anything, Remote Control validates the category that OpenClaw pioneered: AI assistants that run locally but can be controlled from anywhere. Anthropic clearly sees value in this pattern.

The Bigger Picture

What’s interesting is the convergence. Both Anthropic and the open-source community are arriving at the same insight:

The future of AI assistants isn’t cloud-only. It’s local execution with remote access.

Your AI runs on your machine, with your files, your tools, your context. But you can talk to it from anywhere — your phone, another computer, a messaging app.

Remote Control is Anthropic’s first step into this world. OpenClaw has been building it for longer, with more flexibility, at the cost of more complexity.

Choose based on what you value: simplicity and polish, or freedom and control.
